ANOTHER TRAIN COLLISION IN RICHLAND COUNTY

FOR THE SECOND TIME IN AS MANY DAYS AUTHORITIES HAVE RESPONDED TO A TRAIN-TRUCK COLLISION.  THE RICHLAND COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THE COLLISION OCCURRED SHORTLY BEFORE 5:30 LAST NIGHT (TUESDAY) NEAR MANTADOR.

THE DRIVER OF THE SEMI, 53 YEAR OLD RONALD ERICKSON OF WHEATON, ESCAPED INJURY AFTER THE TRAIN COLLIDED WITH THE BACK END OF THE SEMI TRAILER.  BECAUSE OF A BLIND SPOT ERICKSON DIDN’T SEE THE APPROACHING TRAIN AND BEGAN TO CROSS THE TRACKS.  AFTER HEARING THE HORN FROM THE TRAIN ERICKSON ATTEMPTED TO MAKE IT ACROSS THE TRACKS TO AVOID THE COLLISION. THE SEMI IS A TOTAL LOSS, THE TRAIN SUSTAINED DAMAGE BUT WAS STILL OPERABLE.

ON MONDAY, A TRUCK HAD STALLED ON THE TRACKS NEAR FAIRMOUNT.  THAT DRIVER ALSO ESCAPED INJURY AFTER JUMPING FROM THE CAB BEFORE THE COLLISION.
