Wahpeton police respond to homicide incident

The Wahpeton Police Department charged 61-year-old James Bynaum with negligent homicide after the Wahpeton police responded to report of an unattended death at an apartment located at 716 6th Street South in Wahpeton on Friday afternoon.

Wahpeton police officers found the resident of the apartment, 42-year-old Oscar Bynaum, deceased in a bedroom. Oscar Bynaum was James Bynaum’s nephew.

The ensuing investigation on the death found that it was a result of homicidal violence inflicted by another male resident of the apartment who was present at the apartment when officers arrived.

A 61-year-old suspect, who moved to Wahpeton just over a year ago,  is currently being held at the Richland County Correctional Center. Bail was set at $10,000 after prosecution asked for a $500,000 cash bond. Oscar Bynaum had been a resident of Wahpeton for the last five years.

The case remains under investigation by the Wahpeton Police Department, Richland County Sheriff’s Office and North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
