KBMW Wednesday Sports Roundup: Cowgirls open 8AA play at Perham

The Breckenridge Cowgirls will play at Perham tonight as the Minn. Section 8AA girls basketball tournament hits the first-round stage.

The sixth-seeded Cowgirls play the third-seeded Yellowjackets at 7 p.m. in Perham as one of four games in the south half of the section bracket. The other three games have No. 1 seed Hawley vs. No. 8 Warroad, No. 2 seed Roseau vs. No. 7 seed Thief River Falls and No. 4 seed Menahga against No. 5 seed Frazee.

The winners advance the section quarterfinals Saturday at Concordia College. A win by the Cowgirls would match them up against the Roseau-Thief River Falls winner at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Also tonight North Dakota Class A and B basketball wraps up the regular season. The Class A region play-in games are Saturday with the Class B regional play-in games scheduled for Tuesday.

 

Region titles on line tonight across North Dakota

Seven N.D. Class B regional girls basketball teams will earn a spot in the state tournament tonight across the state.

Matchups:

Region 2: Grafton 78 vs. Thompson

Region 3: LaMoure-Litchville-Marion vs. Kidder County

Region 4: Four Winds-Minnewaukan vs. Langdon-Edmore-Munich

Region 5: Flasher vs. Shiloh Christian

Region 6: Velva vs. Rugby

Region 7: Beach vs. Hettinger-Scranton

Region 8: Trenton vs. Kenmare

The eighth region championship will the Region 1 title on Friday between Kindred and Central Cass. Richland plays Northern Cass for third place starting at 6 p.m. with the title game to follow. Both games can be heard on KBMW.

 

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Bison host Jackrabbits for Summit League title

The Summit League men’s basketball regular-season title is up for grabs when North Dakota State hosts South Dakota State at 7 p.m. tonight at the Scheel’s Center in Fargo.

SDSU enters tonight’s game with a 13-2 record in league play while NDSU is 11-3. If the Jackrabbits win they will clinch the title and the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Summit League postseason tournament. A win by the Bison tonight and Omaha at home on Saturday gives the Bison the title.

SDSU won the first meeting 78-73 on Jan. 22 in Brookings.

 

MINNESOTA VIKINGS

Zimmer, Vikings expect to resign Griffen

Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said Wednesday that the team and Everson Griffen’s agent have met to begin talks about the defensive end returning to the Vikings after opting out of the last three years of his contract last week.

Zimmer talked to reporters Wednesday at the NFL Combine and said the Vikings remain a perfect situation for Griffen and that Zimmer expects him back.

A fourth-round pick in 2010, Griffen has 74 ½ sacks for his career for No. 4 on the Vikings’ all-time list.
