BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Friends and family of North Dakota Senate Republican majority leader Bob Stenehjem recalled him as an honest man who sought little credit for his accomplishments
as a lawmaker.
More than 800 people attended the funeral Monday for the 59-year-old Stenehjem. He was killed last week in a vehicle accident in Alaska.
Stenehjem's brothers, Allan Stenehjem and Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, and his sister Peggy told stories of their brother hitching a freight train ride as a grade schooler, and about how he
once got his tongue stuck on a frigid propane tank.
Lansford Democratic Sen. David O'Connell was the North Dakota Senate's Democratic leader for eight years when Bob Stenehjem was Republican leader.
O'Connell says Stenehjem was like a brother to him even though they disagreed on issues.
