BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Former North Dakota Republican state Rep. Ron Carlisle has been appointed to serve out the term of former Bismarck state Sen. Bob Stenehjem.
Stenehjem died in a traffic accident last month. He represented District 30, which includes parts of south Bismarck and rural Burleigh County.
Carlisle was unopposed and the district's governing committee voted unanimously to pick him. Bismarck state Rep. Mike Nathe had expressed interest in the appointment, but he didn't seek it.
Stenehjem's widow, Kathy, said the meeting was called suddenly and she felt the family was being pushed aside. Kathy Stenehjem said the couple's son Rob was interested in the appointment.
Carlisle said the choice had to be made quickly and he didn't mean to offend anyone.
