Flooding Impact

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota's National Guard commander says the cost of this year's flood fighting and repairs to public works will cost more than $500 million.

Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk spoke Thursday to a North Dakota legislative committee.
He says damage to public works in the Souris River region alone totaled almost $200 million.
The flooding Souris damaged more than 4,000 homes in Minot and swamped much of Burlington.

The estimate doesn't include the cost of repairing damage to private homes and property. Sprynczynatyk says that's a much larger amount.

About $92 million in payments have been made to compensate individuals for flood damage they suffered.

Most of the disaster relief bill will be paid by the federal government. The state's share is about $38 million.
