Yesterday was the opening day of the murder trial of Jeffrey Silvernail in Wilkin County District Court.
Prosecutors argued that Silvernail had the motive, the opportunity, and owned the same type of handgun that likely fired the fatal shots to his estranged girlfriend Lori Roberts’ neck and chest; a 9 millimeter that he claims was stolen from a closet in Roberts’ home.
The defense countered that DNA shows unanswered questions, including whose DNA was found under Roberts’ fingernails.
Silvernail was arrested 8 months after Roberts was killed at her home in Doran. He was charged with 2nd degree murder, and later indicted on a 1st degree count with a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no parole if convicted.
