Haze Regulations

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota's governor and attorney general say the federal Environmental Protection Agency should let the state adopt its own plan to reduce haze from coal plants.

The plants burn lignite to produce electricity. The EPA and North Dakota's Health Department disagree on the best way to reduce pollution from some plants.

The EPA advocates a method that it says will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 90 percent. The agency says the method will reduce haze from power plants and improve the view.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple and Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem say the method may not work with North Dakota coal plants. They say a state plan to cut pollution has worked before and will cost less.

The EPA is holding public hearings on the rules Thursday and Friday.
