BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Part of the North Dakota Legislature's disaster aid bill offers loans of up to $30,000 to homeowners who were hit especially hard by this year's floods.
Bank President Eric Hardmeyer said Tuesday that the program affects nine counties where people were eligible for federal emergency grants.
The loans carry a 1 percent interest rate and can take up to 20 years to repay. They're meant to provide money for property owners to rebuild their homes.
A homeowner who lives in the repaired home for six years could have half of the loan principal forgiven.
The bill sets aside up to $60 million for the loans. Hardmeyer says demand will depend on whether affected homeowners want to take on more debt.
