GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - New Census data show that nearly one-third of North Dakota residents are considered poor or low-income, despite an economy that has performed better than much
of the country.

State Data Center Director Richard Rathge says economic growth has benefited some occupations and some areas more than others.

For example, poverty remains a big problem on American Indian reservations. And Rathge says rising incomes in oil country have led to inflation, meaning people with lower incomes can buy less.

Nationally, about half of the population is considered poor or low-income.
