FARGO, N.D. (AP) - As if the warm temperatures and snow-free streets weren't enough, here's further proof it's been an odd December in North Dakota: Fargo firefighters had to battle a grass fire.
City officials say the fire began at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday along 52nd Avenue South and 45th Street. When firefighters from the Fargo Fire Department arrived, the fire was still burning with flames spreading 20 feet across a ditch.
Officials say it's "very rare" for grass fires to occur in December in this area and climate. Typically, the ground is covered with snow.
The incident has prompted fire officials to remind residents to use proper ashtrays, keep watch over outdoor fireplaces and use caution when grilling outdoors in fire-prone conditions.
