This Saturday is the annual cleanup day at Chahinkapa Zoo. Several civic groups and volunteers will embark at the zoo to assist in preparing the zoo for it’s opening on April 23. A main attraction at the zoo this year is an orphaned kangaroo, named Barkley. Barkley has been adopted by zoo keeper Amanda Dukart. The 3 pound joey is carried by Dukart in a cross-body hand crafted pouch. Chahinkapa Zoo’s Curator, Tom Schmalz, says this isn’t the first time a joey has had to be adopted by a keeper, but certainly the first time in Chahinkapa Zoo history. Schmalz, Dukart, and Barkley stopped by the KBMW studios this morning to visit with Rollie and Juli. Dukart says it’s going to be bittersweet the first time Barkley hops out of the pouch.
The Chahinkapa zoo opens for the season April 23. Last year over 70,000 people walked through the gates at the zoo. Photos of Barkley can be seen on our website at KBMWAM.COM and on our Facebook page.
