Traverse Drawdown Begins

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced the drawdown of Lake Traverse will begin Tuesday, which is nearly 2 weeks ahead of normal.

According to Wilkin county engineer Tom Richels, the early drawdown is a preventative measure…

Recent air and ground reconnaissance done by the National Weather Service, and the Corps of Engineers is showing an excessive snow-water equivalent of more than 3 inches in the Lake Traverse basin.

Outflows from Lake Traverse will be passed through Mud Lake and down the Bois De Sioux River. Because of the increased water flows, ice conditions could become unsafe as far downstream as Wahpeton-Breckenridge.

Reconnaissance also is indicating a basin-wide snow-water equivalent of more than 3 inches in the Orwell Lake basin. The drawdown at Orwell is scheduled to increase on March 1st.
