Wahpeton Flood Briefing

Wahpeton, ND (KBMW News)  -- All the pieces are in place for another spring of significant flooding… those words echoed throughout last night’s flood briefing at the Wahpeton Community Center, attended by Richland County Emergency Management, the National Weather Service, U.S Army Corps of Engineers, city and county leaders, law enforcement officials, and concerned citizens.

Greg Gust, National Weather Service warning coordination meterologist, was one of the featured speakers at last night’s meeting. Gust says these flood meetings are important to get the information out on all levels…

Officials laid out facts and figures that show a flood is all but imminent for the area this spring. Long-range weather models show above normal temps and above normal precip for the area which all but assures the area will encounter high water.

As Gust put it last night…to avoid a flood…it would take “an act of God.”…but he reminds us forecasting is not an exact science…

The next flood probability outlook from the River Forecast Center will be issued this Friday. There will be an informational meeting regarding flood issues for Breckenridge residents on Monday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m. at the Breckenridge City Hall Council Chambers.
